The week in brief
- Emirates received its 50th A380. On the ferry flight for the A380, the Airbus Foundation and Action For Hunger sent 41 tonnes of cargo consisting of Plumpy Nut food bars to support several nutrition programs in the region, mainly in Yemen. The peanut-based food bars will be used to feed children five and under, suffering from acute malnutrition. The cargo will be stored in the United Nations Humanitarian Response facility in Dubai. This is the single largest humanitarian cargo shipment in the history of Airbus.
- AirAsia India appointed Globe Air Cargo India, part of the ECS Group, as its cargo GSSA. AirAsia began operations in India on June 12 from its main operating base at Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport, with flights initially serving Chennai, Goa, and Cochin via three A320-200s. It plans to expand its flight schedule across India, planning to operate six to eight aircraft by mid-2015, at least 25 aircraft by end of 2016 and expanding to 36 aircraft within five years.
- Iberia now offers daily flights between Madrid and Panama City.
- CEVA Logistics was named as one of the Best Companies to Work for in Asia at the HR Asia Awards in Singapore.
- Boeing and Emirates finalized an order for 150 777Xs. First announced as a commitment at the 2013 Dubai Airshow, the order by the world’s largest 777 operator was part of the largest product launch in commercial jetliner history. The order – a combination of 115 777-9Xs and 35 777-8Xs – also includes purchase rights for an additional 50 airplanes.
- Amerijet had its inaugural flight Tuesday at its new air cargo hub at Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus, Ohio.
- During German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to China, Song Zhiyong, president and executive director of Air China, and Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa, signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing to expand the scope of the strategic partnership between their companies.
- Iberia Airport Services, Iberia’s handling division, renewed its contract with Egyptair, so Iberia will continue providing services for all Spanish airports, representing more than 600 Egyptair flights per year.
- TNT Express was awarded a contract for the provision of international and domestic delivery services to German engine manufacturer, MTU Aero Engines. The contract sees TNT Express transporting aircraft engines parts between MTU Aero Engines’ facilities in Munich, Hannover and Berlin-Brandenburg and aerospace customers across Europe. The most important destinations are the UK and Ireland.
- Boeing celebrated the first 787-9 Dreamliner delivery with launch customer Air New Zealand. This is the first of 10 Dreamliners to join Air New Zealand’s fleet.
