This month, Chennualt International Airport (CWF) in Lake Charles, La., celebrated the opening of AAR Corp.’s new 118,000-square-foot MRO facility. The $21.5 million high-bay structure, known as Hangar H, is large enough to provide maintenance, repairs and overhaul capacity to various wide-body aircraft, including Boeing 747s, 767s and 777s, as well as Airbus A330s and A340s. AAR, an aerospace and defense contractor, said the new facility is already “booked up” for the next six years due to high demand for MRO services in North America.- Luxembourg-based Cargolux began its fourth scheduled weekly 747-8F service to Xinzheng International Airport (CGO) in Zhengzhou, China, which provides access to inland cities such as Xi’an, Wuhan, Chengdu and Chongqing, plus daily road feeder services to coastal cities, including Beijing and Shanghai. Flights will leave Luxembourg-Findel International Airport (LUX) on Tuesdays, arrive at CGO on Wednesdays and return to LUX on Thursdays after stopping in Tolmochevo Airport (OVB) in Novosibirsk, Russia.
- Charter specialist Air Charter Service has launched a new free app for smartphones and tablets that provides detailed information on more than 200 different aircraft types. The “Aircraft Guide” app, available on all Apple and Android devices, features photos, interior layouts, seating plans and cargo hold dimensions for a wide range of commercial aircraft, from helicopters to private jets to wide-bodies.
- Delta Cargo has been approved to carry the Sendum PT300 and Sendum PT300D GPS devices aboard its aircraft. This brings the total number of approved devices for carriage to eight, allowing the airline’s customers additional options when choosing a tracking device.
- Netherlands-based Trip and Co. and Newtex Industries have launched FireCape, a completely fire-resistant cargo cover that is designed to contain not only fire associated with the transport of palletized cargo but also smoke and water. FireCape is made of Newtex’s Z-Block coated fabric, which can tolerate temperatures as high as 1,800°F (980°C).
- Despite having only one cargo aircraft in its fleet – a 45-year-old ex-Stars Away Aviation DC-9-33F – startup Panamanian carrier Uniworld Air Cargo, based at Tocumen International Airport (PTY), says it is ready to offer scheduled cargo routes throughout the Caribbean and several Latin American countries, including Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
- International Airlines Group (IAG) reported a 6.0 percent decline in cargo-tonne-kilometers (CTK) across all its carriers for September 2014, year-over-year, as well as a 3.1 percent drop for the year to date, compared with the same period in 2013. While IAG’s Spain-based Iberia carrier saw an 8.0 percent y-o-y increase in CTKs for the month, it was not enough to offset an 8.7 percent cargo traffic plunge at British Airways.
- Jakarta’s Garuda Indonesia Cargo, a business unit of Garuda Indonesia, has signed a memorandum of understanding to join the SkyTeam Cargo Alliance by next June. Once the deal is finalized in 2015, Garuda, based in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK), will add 63 new destinations to the cargo alliance, along with stronger ties to the Indonesian freight market.
